For many members of Better Eastern Leisure Centre in Cardiff, Paul O’Sullivan is much more than a familiar face – he is the heart and soul of the centre’s thriving 50+ community.

At 71 years old, Paul has become a pillar of the Eastern family, combining his passion for fitness with an unwavering commitment to bringing people together. As a long-standing and loyal member, he has spent years championing the tremendous social benefits that leisure centres can provide, helping countless people build friendships, improve their wellbeing and feel part of a welcoming community.

Paul is a regular participant in many of Eastern’s popular group exercise classes and can often be found training alongside his friends in 50+ Tai Chi, Health Wise Water Workout, Circuit Training Basics and Escapee Circuit sessions. His enthusiasm for staying active is infectious, encouraging others to embrace healthier lifestyles and try something new.

However, it is Paul’s dedication to social connection that truly makes him stand out. With no café currently available at Better Eastern Leisure Centre, Paul recognised the need for a space where members could come together outside of classes. In response, he began organising regular tea, coffee and biscuits gatherings following sessions, providing what many members describe as a much-needed oasis within the centre.

These informal get-togethers offer members a free opportunity to relax, chat, share stories and enjoy a laugh together. For many, they have become an important part of their weekly routine, helping to combat loneliness, create friendships and foster a genuine sense of belonging.

"Exercise brings people through the door, but friendship keeps them coming back," is a sentiment Paul's actions reflect every day. His warm nature and community spirit ensure that new members are quickly welcomed into the Eastern family.

Adding to his impressive contribution, Paul recently achieved a significant personal milestone by qualifying as a Tai Chi Instructor. His achievement has seen him officially join the Eastern team, where he will instruct and provide cover for classes while sharing his knowledge and passion for Tai Chi with fellow members.

The new qualification marks another exciting chapter in Paul’s journey, with Tai Chi classes on the horizon. His progression from dedicated participant to qualified instructor demonstrates that learning and personal development can continue at any age.

Staff and members alike regard Paul as an outstanding role model whose efforts extend far beyond the gym floor. Whether leading by example in class, organising social gatherings or helping members feel connected, he has become an indispensable part of life at Better Eastern Leisure Centre and its 50+ community.

As the Eastern community continues to grow, Paul O’Sullivan’s contribution serves as a powerful reminder that leisure centres are about far more than fitness. They are places where friendships are formed, confidence is built and communities thrive, and thanks to people like Paul, those values remain stronger than ever.
