On Wednesday 5 August 2026, Blaydon Leisure Centre proudly supported colleagues Jess and Lilia as they completed an inspiring 10K swim challenge, demonstrating remarkable determination, resilience and commitment while raising funds and awareness for two charities close to their hearts.

The challenge began strongly, with both swimmers reaching the halfway point of 5K in just two hours, maintaining a sustainable pace that reflected the dedication and training they had invested in preparation for the event. Supporting them through the first 5K was long-standing swim teacher Paul, whose experience, encouragement and guidance helped provide confidence and motivation during the opening stages of the swim.

For Lilia, the challenge carried a deeply personal meaning as she swam in support of Parkinson’s UK.

“Before I started my swim, I felt so motivated. Having Jess swimming alongside me gave me the encouragement to keep going. We often swim together at Blaydon Pool before or after work, so I’m used to her pushing me to be the very best I can be.”

She described how swimming for a cause so important to her family kept her focused throughout every length and thanked colleagues, customers and supporters for their generosity and encouragement.

Jess was swimming in aid of the Great North Air Ambulance Service, an organisation she had previously worked alongside during a placement. Despite feeling nervous beforehand, she drew confidence from having her own lane arranged and from the support of her sister, Paul and everyone around her.

“The first few kilometres felt great, but around 6km the shoulder and back pain really kicked in. The stretch from 6-8km was by far the hardest. The final kilometre was amazing. More people came to watch, the lifeguards were incredibly supportive, and seeing everyone cheering me on for the last 50 metres made all the hard work worthwhile.”

As the challenge continued, colleagues and customers rallied around both swimmers. Lifegaurd Gareth helped ensure a continuous swimming pathway while speaking to customers about the challenge, and lifeguard Sophie provided encouragement throughout the event. One customer even commented that she felt inspired after swimming alongside Jess and watching her confidently complete length after length.

The atmosphere reached its peak during Jess and Lilia's final length, with staff members and public swimmers gathering poolside to celebrate their achievement and cheer them over the finish line. After completing the swim, tired but delighted, Jess reflected on the impact of the challenge and the generosity of those who had supported it.

“I was overwhelmed by the generosity of the staff and regular customers who donated, and I'm so thankful for everyone’s support. The challenge made me realise how far I can push myself physically, and I'm grateful to be capable of training like this,” said Jess.

Although the challenge is now complete, Lilia and Jess's fundraising journey is far from over. Having recently collected their Great North Run vests for their chosen charities, they are already looking ahead to their next challenge. Jess is determined to continue supporting the Great North Air Ambulance, while Lilia is proud to be raising funds for Parkinson's UK, a charity that is especially close to her heart. With the support of family, friends, colleagues and the local community, both are eager to build on the success of their 10K swim and make a difference through their fundraising efforts.

Congratulations to both Jess and Lilia on an outstanding achievement. Their determination, teamwork and commitment to supporting important causes have inspired colleagues, customers and the wider Blaydon Leisure Centre community.
