As Net Zero Week (4th-11th July) shines a spotlight on environmental action across the UK, leisure centres in Kensington & Chelsea are playing their part in building a more sustainable future through major investment and environmental improvements.

Working alongside Kensington & Chelsea Council, Better have been involved in significant projects designed to reduce carbon emissions, improve energy efficiency and enhance local biodiversity in Kensington & Chelsea centres. These initiatives are helping to ensure that local facilities remain sustainable for future generations while continuing to provide high-quality services for residents.

One of the largest projects has been carrying out a programme to decarbonise some of its public buildings, which includes investment at Kensington Leisure Centre and Chelsea Sports Centre.

Supported through a grant awarded to Kensington & Chelsea through the UK Government’s Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme, the programme is installing new heat pumps and upgrading electrical infrastructure to support the increased demand from electric heating systems. These include energy induced LED lights throughout the building and individual passive infrared censors installed.

We also encourage our customers to make environmentally friendly choices during every visit.

Kensington Leisure Centre promotes walking, cycling and the use of public transport, making it easy for customers to travel sustainably. We also encourage members to bring reusable water bottles, with reusable bottles available to purchase at reception and free water refill stations available throughout the centre.

By making small changes together, we can all help reduce our environmental impact while supporting healthier lifestyles.

As Kensington & Chelsea continues its journey towards a lower-carbon future, these projects highlight how leisure centres can play an important role in tackling climate change, supporting biodiversity and creating more sustainable communities for everyone.
