On Saturday 30th March Morden Leisure Centre was officially unveiled to the public in a Grand Opening which welcomed a number of VIPs, special guests and residents from the local community.

The Grand Opening was jointly organised by the team from Morden Leisure centre, the GLL’s Merton leadership team and Merton Council.  The event was put on to officially welcome the centre into the borough of Merton, as well as mark the closing of the old Morden Park Pools. On the day 500 people attended with over 150 people took part in taster sessions, swim sessions and fitness challenges. The day also benefitted from a number of kid friendly activities including a Giant Foot Dart inflatable, rowing challenge and the local Fire Brigade bringing down their truck.

A number of VIPs and Dignitaries were also present including local Councillors, Stephen Hammond MP for Wimbledon, Raynes Park, Morden and Motspur Park, as well as the Mayor of Merton & the Leader of the Council, Stephen Alambritis. Lastly GLL Managing Director, Mark Sesnan delivered a speech during the Grand Opening Ceremony and lead a Q&A session with GSF Athlete Eden Chung who also helped to officially open the centre alongside the Mayor of Merton, Mary Curtin.

General Manager of Morden Leisure Centre James Davis said, ‘‘it’s fantastic to finally welcome this facility into the local community after all of the planning and preparation that was involved in opening it. I am so proud of the team, who really pulled together to create such a successful event for all the attendees, without them this would not have been possible.  We look forwards to many years of successful events, programmes and initiatives which ensure we help local people to become more active, happy and healthy.’’
