It was a bad day at the office for Copper Box Arena’s home basketball club the London Lions as they suffered only their second BBL Championship defeat of the season to the Plymouth Raiders who came out on top on Sunday afternoon to win 81-75.
What turned out to be a low scoring affair a tight first period ended as a Kevin Ware drive to the basket gave the Lions a 25-23 lead at the break. DeAndre Liggins tied the score at 35 with three second-quarter minutes remaining before Raiders finished strongly and eight unanswered points gave them a 43-35 lead at half time.
Justin Robinson's jump shot made it a two-point game with 5:21 on the clock but Raiders again pulled away and McGill beat the shot clock to put Raiders 63-56 up at the final break.
Lions fought their way back into the game and despite Ware fouling out, Liggins tied the score at 71. It became a one-point game in Plymouths’ favour heading into the final three minutes, but Lions' offence dried up down the stretch and the visitors scored the final five points to take the win.
Two weeks without a game ultimately told and it was a rusty performance from Vince Macaulay's team at times, The Lions remain in third place in the table and are within touching distances of leaders Leicester Riders who they host in the Cup this Thursday evening at the Copper Box Arena giving them an opportunity to bounce back.
