On 6th and 7th June, Denmark Road Sports Centre was proud to host a special two-day fencing workshop in partnership with British Fencing, delivered through the highly regarded Swords After Surgery programme.

The event welcomed approximately 20 participants from across the local community, all of whom were taking part in a unique initiative designed to support women recovering from breast cancer treatment. The workshop provided an opportunity for participants to experience the physical and emotional benefits of fencing in a safe, supportive and encouraging environment.

Swords After Surgery is a specialised fencing programme developed to help individuals rebuild strength, mobility, confidence and overall well-being following breast cancer treatment. Using adapted fencing-based activities and exercises, the programme supports recovery while creating a strong sense of community among participants. The initiative has gained recognition for its positive impact on both physical rehabilitation and mental health, empowering women to regain confidence and reconnect with physical activity.

Throughout the two day workshop, participants were introduced to fundamental fencing techniques and movements under the guidance of experienced instructors. Sessions focused on improving balance, coordination, flexibility, and upper body strength, all while ensuring activities remained accessible and enjoyable for everyone involved.

The atmosphere across both days was incredibly positive, with participants embracing the opportunity to learn new skills, meet others with shared experiences, and challenge themselves in a supportive setting. Many attendees commented on the welcoming nature of the programme and the confidence they gained from taking part.

The workshop was exceptionally well received, with participants praising both the quality of the coaching and the inclusive environment created by the Swords After Surgery team. The event demonstrated how sport and physical activity can play an important role in recovery, helping individuals improve their health while building meaningful social connections.

Hosting events such as this reflects Denmark Road Sports Centre's commitment to supporting health, well-being, and community engagement. The partnership between British Fencing and Swords After Surgery helped bring this inspiring programme to the centre, raising awareness of the valuable support available to those recovering from breast cancer treatment.

The success of the workshop highlights the importance of providing accessible opportunities for people to stay active during their recovery journey. Participants left with new skills, increased confidence, and the encouragement that comes from being part of a supportive community.

Denmark Road Sports Centre looks forward to supporting similar initiatives in the future and continuing to provide opportunities that promote active recovery, inclusion and personal development through sport.
