Badminton

At Sugden there is a total of 16 badminton courts across 4 sports hall so whether you’re looking to improve your fitness, develop your skills or make new friends, badminton is a fantastic sport with many benefits to enjoy. Easy to pick up, with plenty of room to master your skills, getting on a badminton court is a great way to have fun and exercise, regardless of your age or ability. Courts are available to book for 40 or 60 minute sessions.
Badminton Rules
- The first player or pair to best of three games of 21 points is the winner.
- A serve must be hit underarm diagonally over the net and across the court.
- A point is scored when the shuttlecock lands inside the opponent's court
- During a point a player can return the shuttlecock from inside and outside of the court.
- A player is not able to touch the net with any part of their body or racket or hit the shuttlecock twice.
Pickleball
Sugden has 16 Pickleball courts which take place on the existing badminton courts but with a net, similar in size to a tennis net. Our pickleball sessions are designed for all skill levels, offering a mix of strategy, fitness, and social interaction that’s tough to beat. Courts are available to book for 40 or 60 minute sessions. Pickleball Rules
- The first player or pair to 11 points with 2 in hand is the winner.
Service begins from the right-hand court, and serves must be underarm. There are no second serves. - Players can only score points on their own service.
- Service must be made diagonally (as in tennis) and must bounce. The return of service must also bounce.
- There’s a non-volley zone seven feet either side of the net (sometimes referred to as “the kitchen”).
- Teams must win by 2 clear points or the game continues until one team has the winning margin

Basketball

Basketball is one of the most popular team sports in the world. Is a great form of exercise, keeping your body moving and boosting your cardiovascular health. Alongside the physical, basketball can also have a positive impact on your mental and social wellbeing as you play with others.
Basketball Rules
- The goal is to score points by shooting the ball into the opponent's hoop. The team with the most points at the end wins.
- Each team has 5 players on the court. One team tries to score while the other defends.
- Players must bounce the ball while moving. If they stop dribbling, they can’t start again, and if they walk without dribbling, it's a violation.
- A shot made inside the three-point line is worth 2 points, and a shot made beyond the three-point line is worth 3 points. Free throws are worth 1 point.
- The defending team tries to stop the offensive team from scoring by blocking shots, stealing the ball, or forcing turnovers.
