As Net Zero Week (4th-11th July) shines a spotlight on environmental action across the UK, GLL leisure centres in Reading are playing their part in building a more sustainable future through major investment and environmental improvements.

Working alongside Reading Borough Council, Better have been involved in significant projects designed to reduce carbon emissions, improve energy efficiency and enhance local biodiversity in Reading centres. These initiatives are helping to ensure that local facilities remain sustainable for future generations while continuing to provide high-quality services for residents.

The largest projects have been the refurbishment of all our leisure centres, but specifically the development of the new Rivermead Leisure Centre and Palmer Park. Additional projects include Meadway’s Swimming Pool Support Fund which has seen new triple glazing be installed in the pool hall, as well as a new swimming pool cover. South Reading Leisure Centre has also benefitted from new Variable Speed Drives (VSDs) being installed (meaning we can control the pumps and motors within a centre, and they no longer need to run at 100% all of the time, when they aren’t needed to, resulting in a reduced consumption from circulation pumps).

As Reading continues its journey towards a lower-carbon future, these projects highlight how leisure centres can play an important role in tackling climate change, supporting biodiversity and creating more sustainable communities for everyone.
