10 Years of This Girl Can campaign in Welwyn Hatfield
This year marks the 10th anniversary of the This Girl Can campaign in the borough, celebrated with a wide-ranging programme of free activities designed to inspire women and girls of all ages and abilities to get active and try something new.
One of the standout sessions took place at Gosling Ski Slope, where a two-hour instructor-led lesson welcomed 35 participants. The session brought together a vibrant mix of returning attendees from previous years and newcomers keen to give skiing a go for the first time. With an impressive age range spanning from 6 to 57. Participants shared positive feedback across social media, and the session’s success has already sparked interest in developing future women and girls-only ski opportunities.
At Hatfield Leisure Centre, an Olympic Weightlifting masterclass offered something different, featuring impressive demonstrations from GLL Sport Foundation athlete Gilda Trapani. Twelve participants took part, including a Live Longer Better Champion and a No Limits 2026 Ambassador, learning key techniques such as the Clean and Jerk and Snatch in a supportive environment.
Water sports enthusiasts headed to Stanborough Water Sports Activity Centre, where four fully booked, instructor-led sessions in paddleboarding and kayaking took place. The sessions welcomed a mix of first-timers and experienced paddlers, with plenty of laughter and enjoyment as participants embraced the fun - including the occasional splash into the water.
Meanwhile, Gosling Sports Park hosted a range of activities, including tennis sessions for all ages, from under-8s through to adults. Coaches supported participants to develop new skills and build confidence on the court. Gymnastics sessions also proved popular, with women and girls of all ages taking part. Guided by a qualified coach, participants learned basic techniques, progressed to more advanced skills and focused on stretching and flexibility.
The success of this year’s programme demonstrates the continued impact of This Girl Can in breaking down barriers to physical activity and encouraging women and girls across the borough to get involved, have fun and feel confident in being active.
