Float to Survive 2026
Recent local articles and community safety campaigns in Cumbria highlight the importance of the “float to survive” technique. In areas such as Penrith, where many people visit lakes like Ullswater, water safety education is essential, particularly during the busy summer months.
At sessions supported by Penrith Leisure Centre, the message is simple: if you fall into water unexpectedly, do not panic. Instead, float on your back, tilt your head back, and spread your arms and legs to stay afloat and regain control of your breathing.
Local engagement has shown how effective these sessions can be. One recent activity saw a small group of children take part, with a powerful response:“Brilliant” is how one child described the float to live session. Five kids showed up, some shy and reluctant to take part. By the end they were lively, talking, confident, and armed with the skills to save themselves or friends if they find themselves in trouble.”
Across Cumbria, fire and rescue teams continue to deliver this life-saving message, warning that cold-water shock can quickly cause panic. Floating allows individuals to stay calm, conserve energy, and significantly improve their chances of survival until help arrives.
