Frazzled by stress?

Stress is a modern-day ailment which simply can't be ignored. In fact, according to a report, 74 percent of adults were so stressed in the past year that they felt overwhelmed and couldn't cope.

It's not all bad though, a little bit of stress can make can help you accomplish tasks more efficiently. It can even boost memory and aid you in situations where you need to think on your feet or feel under pressures, such as exams or an important meeting.

The problem comes when you're constantly in a state of stress. You need to give yourself time to recover after firing on all cylinders because if you are in a constant state of stress, you become susceptible to anxiety, depression, heart disease, weight gain and more.

So what makes you feel stressed and how do you overcome it?

Most of us stress about things that never happen so next time you feel the pressure rising, ask yourself, honestly and realistically, what is the worst that could happen?

Here are some tips on how to stress less when faced with a range of different situations:

Make time for you

Look after yourself

We all know that time is precious but our tendency to pack every living moment with some sort of activity can leave us feeling, well quite frankly, overwhelmed and stressed. So instead of trying to tick off everything on your neverending to-do list, take time for yourself without feeling guilty about it. Whether it’s reading a book, staying active or a long hot soak in the bath, find something that will help you unwind and leave your worries behind. You'll then feel re-energised to face the world with a fresher perspective.

Realise good is good enough

It's a fact: nobody's perfect. So instead of chasing the unachievable, embrace your good qualities. Apply this to work and you'll find that you're a whole lot happier. Stop at 80 percent and move on to the next task. Otherwise, hours of your life are wasted when it's not worth it. Remember, nobody notices the difference apart from you, so be kinder to yourself.

Limit your social media

Power off

If you really need some downtime, turn off your smartphone. Sure, it’s great to connect with old friends on Facebook or find a good restaurant near you on Twitter, but do you really need to know these details at this very moment in time? Take time out from your mobile device and read a book to lower your stress levels and stop you from the dreaded FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out). And it really won't affect your Instagram following.

Embrace the messiness

It comes with the territory and means you’re leading a busy, fulfilling life— not a Stepford existence. We're not robots and it's okay to make mistakes, so don't be too hard on yourself.

Write it down

The power of the pen

If you're struggling to nod off or are feeling stressed, pick up a pen and write it down. Not only will this clear your head but you will also be able to focus your thoughts and keep you on the right track. Start by noting down your goals and then add what you are grateful for. Gratefulness may help relieve stress as it makes you feel more positive and content towards life.
