Net Zero Week spotlight at John Bunyan Sports and Fitness
Working alongside The Conservation Volunteer charity, John Bunyan Sports and Fitness in Bedford has been involved in a project designed to enhance local biodiversity. This initiative amongst others are helping to ensure that local facilities remain sustainable for future generations while continuing to provide high-quality services for residents.
This project has been running for alomst 3 years and has seen a group of local volunteers (along with support from centre staff) turn a derelict wasteground in a thriving, working community garden. The change in the space has been incredible and plans are in place to grow the space even further!
Amonsgt others the garden promotrs bio-diversity in a few different ways:
- Habits made from re-used pallets to promote growth in wildlife
- The sowing of vegetables, herbs and fruit to be used by the in house cookery school
- The promotion of growth for local wild flowers
As Bedford continues its journey towards a lower-carbon future, these projects highlight how leisure centres can play an important role in tackling climate change, supporting biodiversity and creating more sustainable communities for everyone.
