The GLL Gateshead Community Fund, in collaboration with Gateshead Council, is a new funding stream for local organisations to support improved physical activity. In its first year, GLL Gateshead have awarded 10 projects covering the whole of Gateshead, from High Spen in the West to Bill Quay in the East and Bensham in Central Gateshead to Birtley in the South.

Organisations could apply for up to £10000 for their project, with £25000 of funding available. GLL received 41 applications from sports clubs, charities, theatres and community groups with 10 being successful.

We are delighted to announce the successful applicants for May 2026 are:

Bensham Grove Community Centre

Cricketqube

Falla Park Primary School

High Spen Social Action

Lord Lawson of Beamish Academy

North East Diversity, Education and Solidarity

Ravensworth Golf Club

Rutherford AFC

Stomping Grounds NE

Tyneside Women’s Health

The projects covered sessions for families in Wrekenton, children and young people in High Spen and for vulnerable adults in Bensham to name just a few! We are delighted that some of the projects are in areas identified by Rise, the Active Partnership, as key priorities for increasing physical activity for health.

GLL will provide ongoing support to all the projects with links to other organisations to help make each project sustainable. We want to ensure that people can continue to get active after these projects!

The GLL Gateshead Community Fund will be reopen for new applications later this year for organisations who want to start new physical activity sessions across Gateshead.

If you’re already a Better member, know that your membership has made this happen. Your membership fees are re-invested into the local area to support more people to become active!
