Net Zero Week at Gunnersbury Park Sports Hub
As Net Zero Week (4th-11th July) shines a spotlight on environmental action across the UK, leisure centres in (insert partnership name) are playing their part in building a more sustainable future through major investment and environmental improvements.
Working alongside Ealing Council, Better have been involved in significant projects designed to reduce carbon emissions, improve energy efficiency and enhance local biodiversity at the Sports Hub. These initiatives are helping to ensure that local facilities remain sustainable for future generations while continuing to provide high-quality services for residents.
One of the largest projects has been the to decarbonise some of its public buildings programme, which includes investment at Gunnersbury Park.
Supported through the Government’s Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme, the programme is designed to improve energy efficiency, reduce carbon emissions and cut operating costs. The project forms part of the council's strategy to decarbonise public buildings and support its ambition to achieve net-zero carbon emissions across the borough. There have solar panels installed and staff are following GLL guidance on lighting and air conditioning in the gym.
We also encourage our customers to make environmentally friendly choices during every visit.
The Sports Hub promotes walking, cycling and the use of public transport, making it easy for customers to travel sustainably. We also encourage members to bring reusable water bottles, with reusable bottles available to purchase at reception and free water refill stations available throughout the centre.
By making small changes together, we can all help reduce our environmental impact while supporting healthier lifestyles.
Gunnersbury also actively promotes recycling throughout the building with dedicated recycling facilities for customers and staff. Cardboard, plastics, batteries and printer toner cartridges are all recycled wherever possible.
When gym equipment reaches the end of its operational life, we work to recycle or responsibly repurpose equipment rather than sending it to landfill, helping to reduce waste and support the circular economy. we improved our recycling rate by 4% which will reduce waste going to landfills
As Ealing continues its journey towards a lower-carbon future, these projects highlight how leisure centres can play an important role in tackling climate change, supporting biodiversity and creating more sustainable communities for everyone.
