Net Zero Week in Hillingdon
As Net Zero Week (4th-11th July) shines a spotlight on environmental action across the UK, leisure centres in Hillingdon are playing their part in building a more sustainable future through major investment and environmental improvements.
Working alongside Hillingdon Council, Better have been involved in significant projects designed to reduce carbon emissions, improve energy efficiency and enhance local biodiversity in Hillingdon Sport and Leisure Centre, Highgrove Pool and Fitness centres and Botwell Green Sport and Leisure Centre . These initiatives are helping to ensure that local facilities remain sustainable for future generations while continuing to provide high-quality services for residents.
One of the largest projects has been Hillingdon Councils decarbonisation programme, which includes investment at Hillingdon Sport and Leisure Centre and Highgrove Pool and Fitness Centre.
Supported through the Governments Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme, the programme will substantially reduce carbon emissions and help towards the authority's ambition for its operations to be carbon neutral by 2030. The works, which include measures such as the installation of air source heat pumps and solar panels, are projected to lead to substantial energy savings per year.
A separate project to make carbon reductions at Botwell Green Leisure Centre in Hayes, has been being part-funded by Sport England. The works include adding better insulation to the roof and the installation of solar panels.
As Hillingdon continues its journey towards a lower-carbon future, these projects highlight how leisure centres can play an important role in tackling climate change, supporting biodiversity and creating more sustainable communities for everyone.
