On Saturday 19th of June 2021, Team Islington together from Islington Tennis Centre and Gym  to Gunnersbury Park Sports Hub to compete in the first London Youth Games event of the postponed 2020 campaign. The tennis event was regionalised into East and West to comply with Covid 19 capacity rules.

10 teams were present at the West London Competition; Lambeth, Islington, Ealing, Kensington & Chelsea, Richmond, Wandsworth, Hillingdon, City of London, Southwark and Kingston.

It was a tough a format with Islington needing to top their group to progress to the finals but the team managed this and came home happy with bronze medals. For many of our participants they are out of competition practice due to Covid 19 restrictions and academic commitments so to win a medal was a great achievement.

The team was selected through Islington Tennis Centre’s high performance programme and were all Islington residents.

Valentina Bonilla (N7) La Sainte Union

Alexandra Bonilla  (N7) La Sainte Union

Leo Maksimovic (N1) City of London

Leo Sosmilo (N7) St Aloysius

Thank you to Islington’s Tennis Manager Mikael Kiviniemi and coach Mukember Musa who helped the senior players develop. In particular Alexandra Bonilla was the star of the show winning all 5 of the sets she was involved with and incredibly only dropping one game, had their been a separate female senior competition she could have made clear she was the best in the West.
