During the month of August, we have run additional activities for Families and Young People as well as supporting holiday clubs and groups across our centres.
On top of this we have continued to work with our Local Authority partner and other group, clubs and organisations to enable as many residents as possible the opportunity to become active and improve their health.

SEN Camp

Throughout August the Alex Yee Ladywell Arena has continued to host in partnership with Access Sport multisport sessions twice a week at the centre. We have had a mix of activities including Athletics, Aussie Rules, Boccia, Boxing, Football, Taekwondo, multisport and adaptive cycling through Wheels for Wellbeing. Usage has ranged from 25 to 50.

Sexual Health Event

We were approached by the sexual health services in the borough to host an event in the atrium at Glass Mill. This enquiry came from being part of a previous NHS event. It was a small event with only 4 stalls plus an area set aside for talks. Unfortunately, as this was arranged last minute attendance wasn’t what they hoped it would be. But they are hoping to host another event in the future with more lead time to promote.

Post 16 Clearing Day Fair

Better were invited by Baseline Lewisham to be part of this day for pupils who had got their exam results this summer. We were able to speak to young people and their families about career opportunities and pathways in leisure. Usage was steady throughout the day. The Mayor of Lewisham briefly popped into the event to see how it was going.

Young Mayor of Lewisham of Sports Day

The Young Mayors Office approached us at the beginning of the summer about hosting at sports day at the Alex Yee Ladywell Arena. The event was part of the young mayor's manifesto, and they hope this will become an annual event. Around 150 people took part in this event. They did a mix of traditional athletics alongside more fun sport day type games such as tug of war

NHS prevention meeting

Better attend the NHS Prevention meeting as work continues to get NHS services spread out more evenly in two target wards using a hub and spoke model. Glass Mill and Bellingham are being looked at as venues that could host some of these services.  Work will continue to see how we can support the NHS achieve this.

Club Games – promo/planning

Throughout the month of August, we have been promoting Club Games alongside finalising the date for the Timed Swim at Glass Mill. We at this stage have confirmed, a Walking Netball and Walking Football team. As well as getting participants for Swimming, Table Tennis, Pickleball and Badminton.
