On Wednesday 4th September, we will be launching an 12-week dementia-friendly swim session at Canons Leisure Centre. This will be every Wednesday 9:00-10:00 for 12 weeks, finishing on the 20th of November.

There are over 900,000 people living with dementia in the UK, and Swim England research shows that low impact exercise such as swimming has a positive impact on people's physical and mental health. Swimming specifically has the added benefits of reducing anxiety, improving mood and enhancing psychological wellbeing.

There will be a swim teacher on hand at these sessions to provide advice and guidance to participants if they need it. This isn't a swimming lesson and participants cant still attend even if they do not wish to swim but instead prefer to just spend time in the water.

Canons Leisure Centre boasts a fantastic PoolPod that supports people in getting in and out of the water safely and securely.

On the final week we will be hosting a closing party where participants and carers can come together to share their experience, give feedback and discuss next steps in their fitness journey.

If you’re living with dementia or care for someone who is, come along to our new swimming session. With accessible equipment and facilities you can relax and enjoy your swim in a safe environment.

Our dementia friendly swim session is at a quiet time where the leisure centre isn't too busy. You will have the time you need to access the changing rooms and get ready to swim without feeling rushed. Clear signage will be in place to help you navigate around the leisure centre without feeling lost. There will also be dedicated lanes to swim in if you are a complete beginner and other lanes for more experienced swimmers who may want to swim with other people of a similar standard.

If you don't feel confident in coming on your own then you can bring a carer along for free.
