Better Launches ‘Active April’ to Support Local Carers

To mark the 61st anniversary of Carers UK, all Better Leisure Centres in Reading are partnering with the charity to offer carers discounted access to fitness facilities during ‘Active April’ from 1st April to 1st May 2026.

Throughout this period, Carers UK members and those receiving Carer’s Allowance can access Better leisure centres at a discounted rate of £34 per month. This membership includes access to the gym, swimming pool, fitness classes.
The initiative aims to highlight the importance of physical activity for carers, with research showing that 67% of unpaid carers feel more connected to others when they stay active.

This year’s Carers Active Together campaign focus is on 15th April, a day of national action all about promoting movement, wellbeing and the power of community for unpaid carers.

On Wednesday 15th April - Carers can access a free day pass, which can be used for gym, swimming and fitness classes at their chosen Centre (subject to availability). To take out the pass, simply visit your local centre and provide proof of eligibility (Carers UK member or Carers Allowance). There is no need to book online.

Additionally, alongside Reading Borough Council, we will be Welcoming Carers to the centres with designated Welcome Sessions at Rivermead Leisure Centre and Palmer Park Leisure Centre. Come along and find out about support for Carers in Reading, chat to us over a cup of tea and find out about ways to get active.

There's no need to register, just come along! We'll be here to welcome you at:
Rivermead 10am - Midday
Palmer Park 4pm - 6pm

GLL Chief Executive Peter Bundey emphasized the company’s commitment to supporting carers, stating, “We recognise the vital role that carers play in their communities and want to help improve their health and well-being through this initiative.”

Carers UK Chief Executive Helen Walker welcomed the partnership, encouraging carers to take advantage of these opportunities to improve their well-being, reduce stress, and connect with others.
