A week in the life of a Generation Gains apprentice
Hi, my name is Danielle and I started working for BETTER/GLL on the 2nd of July 2019. I do two and a half days at the BETTER leisure Centres in Swindon and the other two and a half days on the Generation Gains program.
The Generation Gains program is working with older people and improving different aspects of their lives and also trying to get them to socialise with other people instead of being isolated. The project delivers seven classes per week, the classes we do are chair exercises, walking football and circuits. At the chair exercise classes, we work on exercises for the participants to improve strength and balance such as walking or strengthening legs and arms to help them on a day to day basis. My three favourite things to do with the job are getting to know new people, hearing their stories from their past and speaking to them about this.
I enjoy making a difference and receiving feedback that we make a difference to the participants. It means a lot and shows to us that we are truly helping them in many aspects of life. I am looking forward to getting my Fitness Instructing level 2 and progressing and gaining my coaching badges such as Football level 1.
