As temperatures rise, the centre is providing a welcoming indoor environment where members of the community can take a break from the heat, access free tap water, and stay safe during periods of extreme weather.

The initiative forms part of a wider national response from GLL to ensure vulnerable residents and those affected by the hot weather have access to a comfortable place to rest and rehydrate. While the space does not need to be air-conditioned, visitors will be able to enjoy a cooler indoor setting and receive a warm welcome from the team.

Residents are encouraged to drop in if they need respite from the heat. Free drinking water will be available, and visitors can also learn more about activities and services available at the centre. Access to paid facilities and activities will continue through the usual booking process.

Caroline Shillabeer, Community Sports Manager for Welwyn Hatfield, said:

"Leisure centres are at the heart of our communities, and during periods of extreme weather it's important that we do what we can to support residents. By designating Hatfield Leisure Centre as a Cool Space, we're providing a safe and welcoming environment where people can take a break from the heat, stay hydrated and look after their wellbeing."

Visitors are reminded to follow public health advice during hot weather, including staying hydrated, avoiding strenuous activity during the hottest parts of the day, and checking in on family members, neighbours and friends who may be more vulnerable to the effects of heat.
