Following on from qualifying for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, Team GB Hockey players Leah Wilkinson and Sarah Jones along with 400m hurdle athlete Jessie Knight were congratulated on their achievements by the Mayor of Epsom & Ewell, Councillor Peter O’Donovan.

The Sports Hall at the Rainbow Leisure Centre & Spa provided the backdrop, where the Mayor was able to ask them about their journey to Tokyo, experience at the Games and see the bronze medals won by the Team GB Hockey team.

“In normal times your hard work and passion for your sport would be an inspiration, but following a period of uncertainty for us all, and with the games being postponed for a year, your achievement has been made all the more special.” said the Mayor.

All three athletes live, work and train in the borough of Epsom & Ewell and receive support at various levels from the GLL Sport Foundation (GSF).

The athletes and the Mayor were also joined by a year 3 class from Auriol Junior School, who were able to ask questions and even hold the bronze medals for themselves.

Partnership Manager David Hughes said, “We currently support 33 athletes in total across the borough and it’s an incredible achievement to qualify for the Olympics. By meeting these local heroes, the children left the Q&A session feeling excited and inspired.”

We would like to wish them all the best of luck in the future and hope to welcome them back to the centre again, maybe with even more medals!
