As Net Zero Week (4th-11th July) shines a spotlight on environmental action across the UK, leisure centres in Gateshead are playing their part in building a more sustainable future through major investment and environmental improvements.

Working alongside Gateshead Council, Better have been involved in significant projects designed to reduce carbon emissions, improve energy efficiency and enhance local biodiversity in Gateshead centres. These initiatives are helping to ensure that local facilities remain sustainable for future generations while continuing to provide high-quality services for residents.

One of the largest projects has been the Carbon Reduction programme, which includes investment at Blaydon and Dunston Leisure Centres.

Supported through by the Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme, the programme is focused on reducing energy usage through implementation of solar panels and ground source heat pumps. The scheme started before Better began operation of the Gateshead centres and therefore we continue to work closely with Gateshead Concil and These are expected to reduce gas usage and emissions by 10%. At Blaydon, the air source heat pumps and mine water heating is expected to provide 90% of the heating for the centre, including the shared NHS space opposite. The scheme also includes replacing lighting to LEDs which reduces electricity consumption and related carbon emissions. The scheme is expected to cost £3.7m and will ensure the sustainability of the centres into the future, whilst contributing to Gateshead’s aim of becoming Net Zero by 2030.

Members of staff at Dunston Leisure Centre have also worked with local organisations to support improving their environment, including fence painting and litter picking. To celerbate David Attenborough's 100th Birthday earlier in the year the Blaydon team took part in flower bed planting outside of the centre to improve biodiversity in the local area. This will increase the number of bees and butterflies that can be seen around the centre.

As the Gateshead Partnership continues its journey towards a lower-carbon future, these projects highlight how leisure centres can play an important role in tackling climate change, supporting biodiversity and creating more sustainable communities for everyone
