Hendon Leisure Centre successfully hosted the annual Barnet Festival Gymnastics Competition on Sunday 5th July 2026, welcoming 300 young gymnasts from across GLL's gymnastics programme for a day of competition, achievement and celebration.

Representing Hendon Leisure Centre, Burnt Oak Leisure Centre and Kensington Leisure Centre, participants showcased the skills they have developed throughout the year in front of more than 1,000 spectators. The event also provided many young gymnasts, including children as young as five, with the opportunity to experience their first gymnastics competition in a supportive and inclusive environment.

The Barnet Festival plays an important role within GLL's gymnastics programme, celebrating participant progress while encouraging continued involvement in the sport. Hendon Leisure Centre currently delivers gymnastics lessons to more than 950 participants and supports over 260 squad gymnasts across a range of disciplines.

Designed to recognise achievement at every level, the competition gave every child enrolled in the programme the opportunity to participate. All gymnasts received a commemorative T-shirt, medal and certificate in recognition of their commitment and performance.

The event was made possible through the dedication of approximately 30 volunteers, including squad gymnasts, parents and family members, who supported the delivery of the competition alongside coaches and centre staff.

A highlight of the day was an inspiring gymnastics showcase by Hendon's performance squads, featuring displays from the Rhythmic, Women's Artistic, and Floor & Vault disciplines. The demonstrations provided younger participants with the opportunity to see gymnasts of a similar age performing at an advanced level, inspiring the next generation of athletes.

The competition was attended by the Deputy Mayor of Barnet Councillor Humayune Khalick, representing the Mayor's Office. During the visit, Councillor Humayune Khalick praised the quality of the event and the positive partnership between Barnet Council and GLL.
