This one-day, shorebased course covers all the usual first aid subjects, but from a boating perspective. It is aimed at anyone who goes afloat, whether on inland waters, rivers, estuaries or on cross channel passages. This course is MCA approved and satisfies the requirements for Coastal Skipper Yachtmaster and Advanced Powerboat certificates of competence and some commercial work afloat.

We Offer RYA VHF SRC exams. This course covers Basics of radio operation, frequencies, distress, emergency and medical assistance procedures, making ship to shore telephone calls, Digital Selective Calling and  Global Maritime Distress Safety System.

RYA VHF/SRC Marine Radio face to face Course and Assessment £125.

Course Dates:

• Saturday 6th December 2025 (£125.00).  £76.00 assessment fee paid direct to the RYA before attending the course.
• Sunday 1st February 2026 (£125.00).  £76.00 assessment fee paid direct to the RYA before attending the course.

RYA VHF/SRC Marine Radio On line course £70.00 (See below for separate assessment fee). You will need to pay for your RYA VHF/SRC exam before either attending the face-to-face course or before booking an exam at west reservoir after completing the online course. Please refer to the RYA link on how to pay for your exam.

Assessment days (for those who have either completed the online RYA VHF/SRC training course or have completed a face to face course but have not completed an assessment)

• Sunday 1st March. £76.00 assessment fee paid direct to the RYA before attending the assessment.

Course description

RYA Day Skipper Theory is a theory-based course aimed at prospective yacht skippers and inexperienced crew looking to boost their knowledge and skillset. The course itself offers a comprehensive introduction to chartwork, navigation, meteorology, and the basics of seamanship. 

Its goal is to help prepare you in making the key decisions needed onboard to skipper a small vessel in familiar waters. The RYA Day Skipper Theory course is open to anyone and while some practical experience is desirable, it is not required. 

For your convenience, the RYA Day Skipper Theory can be taken online or in a classroom setting. The content covered in this course also provides a valuable base of knowledge for those considering taking the RYA Day Skipper Practical course. £415
