4th–10th July marks Net Zero Week, the UK's national awareness week dedicated to highlighting the actions organisations and communities are taking to reduce carbon emissions and create a more sustainable future.

At Chelsea Sports Centre, we are proud to play our part in supporting GLL's commitment to achieving Net Zero through continued investment, operational improvements and everyday sustainable practices.

Investing in a Greener Future

Over recent years, Chelsea Sports Centre has benefited from significant investment designed to improve energy efficiency while enhancing the experience for our customers.

The centre now operates with Air Source Heat Pumps and an upgraded Building Management System (BMS), helping to reduce energy consumption and improve the efficiency of our heating systems.

Energy-efficient LED lighting has also been installed throughout key areas of the centre, including the swimming pool, viewing gallery, Studios 1 and 2, and the gym, significantly reducing electricity usage while providing brighter, more efficient lighting.

Further improvements are on the horizon. From 13 July, our swimming pool will temporarily close to allow essential refurbishment works, including major plant room upgrades and the installation of new pool filtration systems. These improvements will make our pool operations even more energy efficient, helping to reduce environmental impact for years to come.

Many of these sustainability improvements have been supported through the Sport England Swimming Pool Support Fund, helping us continue investing in greener facilities for our local community.

Making Every Drop Count

Water conservation remains a key priority at Chelsea Sports Centre.

Our team monitors water usage every day and carries out overnight monitoring to help identify potential leaks as early as possible. Any issues identified are repaired promptly to minimise unnecessary water loss.

The centre also uses low-flow and push button taps where possible, while pool backwashing procedures are carefully managed to reduce water consumption without compromising water quality.

Reducing Waste Across the Centre

Sustainability extends beyond energy and water.

Chelsea Sports Centre actively promotes recycling throughout the building with dedicated recycling facilities for customers and staff. Cardboard, plastics, batteries and printer toner cartridges are all recycled wherever possible.

When gym equipment reaches the end of its operational life, we work to recycle or responsibly repurpose equipment rather than sending it to landfill, helping to reduce waste and support the circular economy.

Small Actions That Make a Big Difference

Our colleagues play an important role in helping reduce the centre's environmental impact every day.

Simple but effective measures include switching off lights between classes, powering down equipment when not in use, carefully managing pool hall temperatures, monitoring electricity consumption and following energy-efficient opening and closing procedures.

All staff complete environmental awareness training and are encouraged to suggest new sustainability initiatives. Teams have also supported local litter-picking activities and adopted cleaning practices that help reduce waste while maintaining the highest standards of cleanliness.

Helping Our Community Make Sustainable Choices

We also encourage our customers to make environmentally friendly choices during every visit.

Chelsea Sports Centre promotes walking, cycling and the use of public transport, making it easy for customers to travel sustainably. We also encourage members to bring reusable water bottles, with reusable bottles available to purchase at reception and free water refill stations available throughout the centre.

By making small changes together, we can all help reduce our environmental impact while supporting healthier lifestyles.

Looking Ahead

Sustainability is an ongoing journey, and we remain committed to continually improving the way we operate.

Alongside the upcoming pool and plant room refurbishment, we will continue exploring new opportunities to improve water efficiency, reduce energy consumption and operate our historic building in the most environmentally responsible way possible.

Every improvement, whether it's investing in new technology, reducing waste or encouraging sustainable travel, helps move us one step closer to a greener future.

This Net Zero Week, we thank our colleagues, customers and partners for supporting Chelsea Sports Centre on our sustainability journey. Together, we're helping create a healthier environment for both our community and future generations.
