Exciting times ahead in 2026 and beyond.
We’re proud to be celebrating 25 years of Sport on West Road, as our centre opened 25 years ago in 2001.
In this article we’re looking forward to the bright future ahead for the centre.
A brief history
The centre first operated under the name Westgate Centre for Sport by Newcastle city council from 2001 until 2015, then under the Newcastle Trampoline Park & Gym since 2015 by GLL under their Better leisure brand.
When taking over, GLL funded a huge change in Newcastle, with a £2.8m investment in 2016 across all of the leisure centre's it took on.
For Newcastle Trampoline Park & Gym this meant an expansion and refurbishment of the Gym on the first floor, doubling it in size of it;
A new look Better Coffee Corner Cafe area was also added; but the biggest change was the installation of a Trampoline Park into the main hall. The first of its kind in the region.
2019 saw further investment with the addition of a Soft Play area specifically for the younger users.
A bright and sustainable future
In 2022 Newcastle City Council invested £1.4 million into Decarbonisation works across the city’s leisure centres; including installing new technology at Newcastle Trampoline Park.
This included Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHP), Solar Panels and LED lighting.
The ASHPs and Solar Panels providing energy sources, reducing the need for gas and reducing the centre’s carbon footprint.
This work, along with GLL’s own work on recycling and reduction in energy consumption, in line with our company value of Respecting the Planet, is helping the centre work more sustainably for the decades to come.
2026 – new plans
As a charitable social enterprise, we're committed to improving our services in your local community, which is why we're pleased to let you know we're investing heavily again in the facilities at Newcastle Trampoline Park and Gym.
In 2026 GLL are investing over £500,000 in new equipment and activities for the centre – planning for successfully delivering sport on West Road for years to come.
This is starting in June 2026 with an investment in new gym equipment
This year we're investing over £90,000 in upgrading the fitness kit in our gym with brand new Technogym equipment.
We're removing 25 pieces of our oldest kit and replacing it with 23 brand new pieces.
What you're getting:
- New CV kit including treadmills, rowers, bikes, varios and synchros
- New weights machines including some new style machine that we haven’t had before, such as a hip thrust machine and dual pec / fly machine.
- There’ll be more floor matting, increasing the functional workout space and brand-new benches.
- The gym will have to close for 3 days for the work to take place; Monday 22nd June- Wednesday 24th June 2026.
- We want to make sure your routine is as uninterrupted as possible, so you can enjoy a workout at our other Newcastle leisure centre gyms during this time: East End Pool, Gosforth Leisure Centre, West Denton Leisure Centre
Investment of over £400,000 into a brand-new Trampoline Park Product in Autumn 2026
In August 2026 we’ll sadly have to close our Trampoline Park for a couple of months, but excitingly this is so that we can install a brand-new Trampoline Park.
The new Park will brand new features including a Huge Strike Arena play structure with interactive games and a sports pitch with interactive targets.
The Trampolines will remain but are being replaced with brand new beds and interactive games here as well.
The Air Bag will remain also, but we’re adding a new jump point slide option.
We’re also investing in an improved customer journey, including online access to our safety briefing video, meaning less time to wait before you can play once you arrive.
We expect to be open again in time for the October Half Term school holidays, so watch this space.
Please note our Soft Play is expected to remain open throughout for our younger (Under 10’s only) customers.
We would like to thank you for your patience and support while we carry out these improvements and can't wait to welcome you back to see what we’ve done.
