Meet Vasey, one of our gym members

Vasey has been using our gym for the past five years; during this time he has become a regular user and books time in with our Fitness team twice per week.

He needs the guidance of our team to help him navigate around the machines in our gym as he has impaired vision and is registered blind. Vasey has what is known as Macular degeneration, which is a progressive eye disease damaging the macula, the central part of the retina. It impairs sharp, detailed vision required for activities like reading and driving, but it leaves peripheral (side) vision intact.

He has built up a good rapport with Wayne one of our fitness instructors who has devised a programme for Vasey to follow

Vasey doesn’t let his disability stop him from having his best life. His positive attitude and witty banter always seem to come through when he’s cracking jokes with the reception staff on his way into the gym and again with Wayne calling himself the tank which is a shout out to the training, he has been putting in.

As well as being a regular gym user Vasey has other extra-curricular activities which include being a DJ, doing blogs and being a radio presenter

Vasey DJ’s all over the North East under his assumed name “DJ Vasey”

He also does video blogs and is a presenter on FM spice radio where he runs his own shows independently
