On Sunday the 13 October the North Kesteven Community and Health Team and Participation Sport delivered the 12th Annual Spires and Steeples challenge. A multi-terrain run or walk across the Lincolnshire countryside. Given the rainfall over the last 7 days and on the day, it was incredibly wet, muddy and challenging day for all.

360 people entered with 269 runners and walkers completing the Challenge, this was made up of 158 women, 111 men and at least two four legged friends. The age range of competitors was from 14 to 81.

The 26 mile walkers were set off by the Leader of North Kesteven District Council (Councillor Richard Wright who also completed the full 26 miles) and the 26 mile runners started off by Helen Faulkner a local athlete supported by the GLL Sports Foundation. The 13 mile start line was set off by the Chief Executive of North Kesteven District Ian Fytche.

Over 20 volunteers from local scouts to our walk leaders assisted on the day in additional to many BETTER staff from the leisure centres in North Kesteven who gave up their day off to stand in the rain to cheer and help the brave competitors. The finish line was manned by another GLL funded athlete and local rising star para-athletics, Thomas Talbot, who presented medals to all those who crossed the finish line.

After 10 hours 11 minutes and 6 seconds an emotional last participant crossed the line, what a hero!

Big thanks to NKDC, Participation Sport, Lincolnshire Coop, Active Lincolnshire, Pilgrim Food Service, Lindum Group, Giant Store at Doddington Hall, Metheringham Scouts, Access Lincoln, Jaguar Timing, Sleaford Sports and Supplements and the staff and volunteers who worked tirelessly to bring the event together.
