Welcome to our May 2026 Community Update - a snapshot of the fantastic work happening across Better centres and out in the community. From inclusive programmes and partnerships to events, health initiatives and local impact, this month’s update highlights how our teams continue to support and connect people through sport, health and wellbeing.

Hatfield Hosts Inclusive Swimming Gala with Paralympic Guest

Marking its 60th anniversary, Platypus Swimming Club - an inclusive club for people with disabilities based at Hatfield Swim Centre - hosted a celebratory swimming gala.

The event welcomed 40 swimmers aged 8 to 80, with teams travelling from Stevenage, Ruislip and Essex to compete in a range of races and relays. The day was made extra special by the presence of GLL Sports Foundation ambassador and Paralympic gold medallist Louise Fiddes, who took part in an exhibition race and inspired participants by sharing her journey.

Closing celebrations were led alongside Welwyn Hatfield Mayor Cllr Michal Siewniak, with speeches and medals awarded, marking a fitting tribute to six decades of inclusive swimming.

Eid-Al-Adha Celebrations across Welwyn Hatfield

The Muslim community came together in late May to celebrate Eid al-Adha, with two successful events taking place across Welwyn Hatfield.

At Stanborough Park, local volunteers and community leaders hosted a well-attended celebration, supported by GLL and Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council. The event ran smoothly, with strong coordination on the day and positive feedback from attendees. The occasion was further marked by a visit from local MP Andrew Lewin, who joined the community in recognising the importance of the celebration.

Alongside this, Hatfield Leisure Centre also hosted Eid celebrations organised by Naeem Foundation, welcoming members of the local community to mark the occasion together. The event was attended by MP Andrew Lewin and Welwyn Hatfield Mayor Michal Siewniak, highlighting the significance of the celebrations at a borough level and the strength of local partnerships.

These events reflect the continued commitment to supporting inclusive, community-led activities across our facilities - providing opportunities for residents to come together, celebrate cultural traditions and build strong community connections.

A huge thank you to all volunteers, partners and staff involved in making both events such a success.

Partners Experience Dementia-Friendly Physical Activity in Action

Better recently hosted the Welwyn Hatfield Dementia Friendly Community Partnership monthly meeting at Hatfield Leisure Centre, welcoming representatives from local organisations, businesses and the council.

During the visit, partners explored the Wellness Hub and experienced the Innerva power-assisted equipment first-hand, with a demonstration from Healthwise Coordinator Gemma Day.

Race For Life 2026

Stanborough Park once again hosted the 2026 Race for Life on Sunday 17 May.

The popular event brought together residents of all ages and abilities, with participants taking on 3k, 5k, 10k and Pretty Muddy challenges in support of Cancer Research UK.

We are proud to share that the event has already raised an incredible £130,000 for life-saving cancer research, reflecting the strength of community support across the borough.

Among those taking part was Gosling Sports Park team member Sophie Casey, who completed the 5k event. Sophie ran in memory of her grandfather, in honour of a close family friend, and in support of her grandmother who is currently undergoing treatment.

A huge well done to everyone who took part, volunteered or supported.

Weekly Wilder Wellbeing Walks For Local Carers

Since the end of April, the Herts and Middlesex Wildlife Trust has been working with Carers in Hertfordshire to deliver a four‑week sensory‑based Wilder Wellbeing Walk programme at Stanborough Park, Welwyn Garden City. Each weekly walk explored a different habitat, from woodland and grasslands to chalk streams.

Designed to give carers time away from their caring role, the programme encouraged participants to reconnect with nature, explore local green spaces and boost their wellbeing. Blending gentle nature walks with mindfulness and creative activities, the sessions also invited carers to rediscover a sense of wonder and connection through the natural world.

Raising The Profile of Angling in WGC

On the 12th May the Welwyn Garden City Angling Club arranged for some filming at Stanborough to promote the site and to continue to raise the profile of Angling.

The Club welcomed two expert Anglers to site to give advice on Angling and the benefits of Angling.

Lemsford Fete

The 5th of May saw the return of Lemsford Fete - a hugely popular family event in Welwyn. Better was proud to be part of the day once again, welcoming over 200 visitors to our stall.

Our team shared tips on staying active and highlighted family-friendly activities across our local facilities, with mini archery proving a standout favourite among children and adults alike.
