Yearsley Swimming Pool has secured funding from City of York Council through the York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority. This support, provided via the Mayoral Renewables Fund Grant, will help reduce energy costs, cut carbon emissions, and improve the long-term sustainability of the facility.

The funding will enable the installation of a 182 kWh solar photovoltaic (PV) array on the pool roof. Once operational, the system is expected to save approximately £20,000 per year in energy bills and reduce 743 tonnes of CO₂ over the lifetime of the panels - the equivalent of planting 34,125 trees.

GLL (Greenwich Leisure Limited) - the charitable social enterprise that operates the four Better leisure centres across the city - has already invested heavily in energy-saving improvements at Yearsley Swimming Pool, including the installation of a pool cover, LED lighting, PIR sensors, and variable speed drives.

Installation schedule & customer information

Work to install the solar panels is due to begin on Monday 8 December and is expected to take around three weeks. During this period, there will be some unavoidable disruption to car parking:

  • The small car park at the front of the facility will be closed to create a safe working area for contractors.
  • The three accessible parking bays normally located there will be relocated to the main car park. These will be clearly coned and signed — please respect these spaces so they remain available to those who need them.
  • An additional six spaces in the main car park will be unavailable due to scaffolding.

Pedestrian access

  • During daylight working hours, access from the car park to the centre entrance will be via the pedestrian route on Hayley’s Terrace.
  • Outside working hours, the usual path through the small front car park will reopen for use.

We apologise for any inconvenience caused during this essential improvement work and thank you for your understanding as we make Yearsley Swimming Pool more sustainable for the future.
