Exercise after Stroke is a rehabilitation programme for Stroke Survivors that is designed to support them through a class-based approach. It is a 14-week programme that assesses those affected by Stroke and provides tailored sessions to support the rebuilding of function and movement post Stroke.
The weekly group class will last an hour and comprises of the following components; warm up with mobility and pulse raising exercises, a cardiorespiratory endurance circuit, functional strength and movement and a cool down. The instructor adapts all exercises, so, they are appropriate for all ability levels.
Beginners and people who haven’t exercised before are welcome to attend. All classes are led by a Level 4 Specialist Instructor.
Studies have shown a variety of benefits for Stroke Survivors to continue with rehabilitation post hospital discharge.
Community-based rehabilitation appropriate technique increases rehabilitation participation rates and enhances motor function, daily activity, and social activity of stroke survivors (Rue et al, 2017.) Activities which promote mobility and fitness are imperative for the prevention of further pathological events such as falls resulting in fracture, recurrent strokes or cardiac events (Eng et al, 2003).
Furthermore, post-stroke exercise can mitigate fatigue and depression, reduce fall risk, and improve autonomy while lowering blood pressure, cholesterol, and glucose levels—all key stroke risk factors (Saunders et al., 2014; Billinger et al., 2012).

What Happens?
The Exercise After Stroke Programme is led by highly skilled Level 4 Specialist Instructor who can offer a range of information and expert advice for service users, their carers and families. Once the referral has been received from the necessary health professional you will be contacted for some further information on your health and complete some questionnaires during a telephone consultation. This telephone call will usually take around 20 minutes.
If you are deemed suitable for the programme, you will be booked for a face-to-face Initial Assessment at one of your local Better Leisure Centres. The initial assessment lasts around 60 minutes and will understand your specific strength and mobility needs and to assess your current fitness level. Throughout the programme you will further receive advice and have regular reviews/assessments, alongside signposting to other exercise opportunities. Exercises are structured and progressed over a period of weeks and months to suit your individual needs.
What are the outcomes?
Our Exercise After Stroke Programme will help participants to rebuild function and aspects of mobility as well as confidence that they may have lost because of the Stroke and give them the opportunity to meet and socialise with those who have been through similar experiences which will have an positive impact upon their health and well-being.
It will also support participants to access additional physical activity opportunities such as low impact fitness classes, aquatic based sessions and supervised gym sessions as well as local health walks which will help to create long-term adherence to exercise and reduce the risk of further health conditions.
