YOUNG SPORTS ATHLETES IN CARDIFF RECEIVE AWARDS TO SUPPORT THEIR CAREERS

65 talented young athletes from Cardiff have received awards from a £45,000 fund – thanks to leisure charitable social enterprise GLL, which manages Cardiff’s Better Leisure Centres on behalf of Cardiff Council. The local athletes will be supported through the GLL Sport Foundation, the largest independent athlete support programme in the UK, which this year marks its 15th year of supporting today and tomorrow’s athletes.  Supported athletes will benefit from free gym and swim memberships and access to sports science, medical support and employment opportunities.

A presentation event took place at Glamorgan Cricket Ground Stadium, Sophia Gardens, Cardiff when winners were announced.   Welsh Rugby League player Alex Cuthbert attended the event to congratulate the winners which included table tennis champion Anna Hursey, swimmer Kaden Edwards and gymnast Lauren Evans.  The Rhodri Morgan Award was presented to Zachariah Maghur, who at 14, is the top ranked volleyball player of his age group.

Peter Bundey, Sport Foundation Chair, said:

“ As we celebrate our first 15 years of the GLL Sport Foundation I would like to give heartfelt thank all our sponsors, partners and supporters, who remain the lifeblood of this fantastic GLL initiative. The wealth of young sporting talent within Cardiff’s local communities is truly inspiring. We are delighted to play our part in supporting the development of sporting talent across the city where GLL operates sports and leisure facilities. Together with our partners, we are making a real difference to help enrich lives through sport and at the same time supporting many of the UK’s next generation of sporting talent.”
