- More info »

We’re delighted that Carlisle City Council approval has been granted for The Sands Centre redevelopment.

Works are expected to begin in late 2019 and will see the refurbishment of existing facilities and the provision of additional state of the art sports and leisure facilities including:

·         A 25-metre eight-lane swimming pool.

·         A 20-metre by eight-metre learners’ pool, with moveable floor.

·         A 120-station fitness suite.

·         New four-court sports hall and gallery.

·         Dance and exercise studios.

·         NHS physiotherapy suite.

·         Existing sports hall transformed into a dedicated auditorium.

·         New bar and café facilities.

·         Changing Places provision and new changing facilities.

We’ve worked with Carlisle City Council to ensure that there is as little interruption as possible to the service that we currently offer throughout the project. Our leisure provision will be relocated to temporary customised facilities at the old Newman School site on Lismore Place. This includes our gym and fitness class programme. We will transfer the gym equipment over to the temporary facilities and are currently working on the fitness class timetable and hope to be able to schedule as many classes as we can on the same days and times as the current timetable.

We will have space within the temporary facilities for activities such as football, badminton, gymnastics and trampolining. Changing facilities and toilet facilities will also be provided.

As soon as we have further details on the programmes that will operate at the temporary facilities, we will share them. We expect this to be confirmed in the next few weeks. This information will be posted on our webpage better.org.uk/thesands and on our social media channels.

The Sands Centre Arts & Entertainment programme will be unaffected by the redevelopment works and will continue to operate from the current centre. There will be some alternative access arrangements put in place but all event goers will continue to receive the usual high standard of service throughout the build.
