The Sands Centre, recently welcomed a group of Year 10 SEND students from Trinity School for a specially designed workplace experience morning aimed at providing insight into careers within the leisure industry.

The community engagement initiative brought together centre staff and students in a supportive and interactive environment, helping young people explore the wide range of opportunities available within a modern leisure centre setting. 12 students attended the session alongside Trinity School staff who work closely with them on a daily basis.

Taking place on Friday 15 May, the morning began with a warm welcome, sign-in and centre tour led by members of the team. Students were introduced to the different roles that help The Sands Centre operate each day, giving them valuable behind-the-scenes insight into careers within leisure, health and fitness.
The experience then moved upstairs for a series of practical workshops delivered by team members from across the centre. Students learned about the important role of a lifeguard, including water safety responsibilities and basic first aid skills through an engaging and interactive session.

The group also took part in a health and wellbeing workshop focusing on nutrition and muscles, where they discovered more about healthy lifestyles, exercise and how health facilitators support customers within the fitness environment.
Following a short break, students changed into PE kit before finishing the morning with an introduction to spinning bikes and a mini fitness session in the gym’s spinning studio. The activity session gave students the chance to experience a group exercise environment firsthand while building confidence and trying something new in a safe and supportive setting.

Matthew Graham, Better Health Co-ordinator from The Sands Centre said:
“We were delighted to welcome the students from Trinity School to The Sands Centre. It was fantastic to see everyone engaging so positively with the sessions and learning more about the variety of roles available within the leisure industry. Supporting young people in our community and helping them build confidence and experience is incredibly important to us.”

Mrs Love, Assistant Head Teacher, Trinity School said:
“Thanks for hosting the Home group today. I saw a couple of them on their home this afternoon. I asked them what the best part of the week was and they said the spinning class. One of them said it was thrilling but exhausting! I saw some other ones with the t-shirts on too.”

The event highlights Better’s continued commitment to community engagement, inclusion and creating meaningful opportunities for young people of all abilities. Staff from across the centre worked together to ensure the students had an enjoyable and informative experience, while also showcasing the positive impact leisure centres can have within local communities.

The Sands Centre would like to thank Trinity School, the accompanying staff and all colleagues involved in delivering such a successful and rewarding morning.
