We are proud to be supporting the Royal Life Saving Society’s UK’s Downing Prevention Week campaign from 18-25 June 2022. The RLSS UK is urging people to get summer-ready by brushing up on their water safety skills and knowledge. Over 400 people accidentally drown every year in the UK and Ireland. There is a range of free educational resources available to help you to stay safe. For more information on Drowning Prevention Week or advice on how you can stay safe, visit www.rlss.org.uk
Throughout 2020 and 2021, many young people have missed out on the opportunity to swim leaving a dramatic gap in swimming and water safety education.
To support with this, Islington Council and Better are offering FREE swimming lessons over the summer holidays and October half term. The sessions are designed to improve swimming skills and confidence in the water. During the summer of 2021 over 900 people took part. Improvements were seen in a variety of swimming attainment categories, including retrieving an object from the bottom of the pool, kicking unaided and swimming further.
You can apply for the children and family lessons
In addition, we are offering a free block of 10 weekly sessions for people aged 60+ at Ironmonger Row Baths and Highbury Leisure Centre. You can apply for 60+ adults lessons
There are other ways in which you can develop your swimming skills at Better. As the largest provider of swimming lessons in the UK, we help over 200,00 people a week learn to love the water and keep active, by becoming capable and confident swimmers in a leisure centre near them. This includes our Academy classes where there is a lot more focused on self-led progression and advanced safety techniques. This will include setting personal targets, junior lifesaving and personal survival techniques.
