On Saturday 28th May Sobell Leisure Centre held their first internal gymnastics (floor and vault) competition since lockdown. In addition to members of Sobell gymnastics programme, students from Highgate School were invited to participate. It was a fantastic event with 75 gymnasts competing as well as 6 performances. This was an opportunity for the gymnasts to take part in a friendly competition and display what they had learnt during their lessons. All the coaches and judges were very impressed with the level on the day.
There was a special performance from GLL Sport Foundation supported athlete Saffron Severn. Saffron represents Great Britain for rhythmic gymnastics and was the 2019 Junior British Champion. All the spectators really enjoyed the performance, particularly the young gymnasts who were inspired by seeing someone who competes at a very high level.
Well done to Ebony who took the lead in putting the event together. A big thank you also goes to Alexis, all the coaches, judges, the centre team and volunteers involved in making it happen.
Earlier in the month a team from Sobell Trampoline Club represented Islington. George Auberson came 5th, this is the first time in time in 8 years Islington has made it in the top 10 (Top 5!). Nell singer came 9th out of 66 her highest position ever in Youth Games and again first time in the top 10 for many years.
Sobell Leisure Centre has a wide range of gymnastics courses on offer for a range of ages and abilities. Not only does gymnastics provides a great opportunity for children to try a new sport, make friends and have fun, but they'll also learn a number of foundation and transferable skills that can be taken into other activities and sports.
