Launching Waltham Forest Cup
The Waltham Forest Cup is a brand-new initiative to promote Social Sports and chosen customers will represent their centres in one of 4 activities throughout the year. The locations of the competitions will move around the borough to make it fairer.
Customers represent their area in 4 sports throughout 2026 to have competitive fun, win point, win medals and try to help their centre lift the cup.
The First round was Table Tennis at Chingford Leisure Centre on 29th March and most of the players came from our Bat and Chat sessions which are primarily for over 60s. Although the competitions are for any adults and we expect a younger crowd at future events.
Points after Round 1 are:
Walthamstow LC 50
Waltham Forest Feel Good Centre 40
Chingford LC 30
Peter May and Stadium 20
Leyton 0
Score 0
How does it work?
Centres will bring one or two teams to each of the 4 events throughout the year.
There will be medals for the winning teams. Based on the positions at the event your centre will get points to add to the league table for the Waltham Forest Cup.
When is the next event?
Saturday 18th July between 2pm-4pm at Leytonstone Leisure Centre for badminton. There will be a combination of singles and mixed doubles matches.
Who is it for?
Adult members and regular customers can register to take part, and centres will select the players.
I go to multiple centres who should I play for?
You can select the centres you visit on the form and will be allocated the one which needs players.
How do I register?
It's great that you are interested in taking part in badminton, please email Daniel.Bank@GLL.ORG.
If badminton is not your activity keep on the lookout for the next social sport competition as part of the Waltham Forest Cup.
What is the cost?
This is part of the Summer Open Weekend and you can book in for free.
Can I only take part in one event?
Yes, that is fine, we are hoping multiple members will represent their centres across the different activities as we want more people to get involved.
Can I watch?
Depending on the sport and the activity layout this should be possible. Complete the form and say you want to watch for more information.
What are Social Sports?
These are sessions where participants can sign-up as individuals and join others for a sport activity. Depending on your membership these are included or an additional fee, and they are a good way to meet people. GLL’s current list of social sports is badminton, basketball, football, pickleball, running, table tennis, and tennis. You can check out the Waltham Forest programme and read more information in this article or on the Better UK app.
