NHS Blood Donation Drive at Waltham Forest Feel Good Centre
GLL, the charitable social enterprise that operates Better leisure centres, is supporting the NHS in its efforts to increase blood donations by welcoming a Mobile Blood Donor Centre to Waltham Forest Feel Good Centre on Thursday 15 October. The initiative forms part of a year-long pilot programme designed to test the effectiveness of bringing donation facilities directly into community locations where demand is high. The NHS mobile unit's first visit to the centre proved immediately successful, with all 30 available donation appointments booked within a short period.
GLL and the NHS hope that the visibility of the mobile donor centre will not only increase the number of donations but also encourage more people from underrepresented groups to become regular donors. A particular focus is being placed on engaging people from diverse ethnic backgrounds and younger adults aged 18 to 24, whose donations are vital to meeting future demand. People of Black heritage are more likely to have the Ro blood type, which plays a crucial role in treating patients living with sickle cell, the UK's fastest-growing inherited blood disorder.
Each donation appointment takes approximately 45 minutes, with sessions running from 12.15pm to 2.45pm and again from 4.00pm to 6.30pm. While not everyone will be eligible to donate, organisers hope the convenient location and greater awareness of the ongoing need for blood donations will inspire more residents to get involved. Anyone interested in donating can visit the NHS Blood and Transplant website to check their eligibility and book an appointment.
The visit took place at Waltham Forest Feel Good Centre, recently recognised as UK Active's Regional Centre of the Year, and reflects GLL's ongoing commitment to supporting the health and wellbeing of local communities beyond traditional leisure services. The area has been identified by Danny Morgan, Business Development Officer for NHS Blood and Transplant as one where residents are particularly keen to donate blood, and the rapid uptake of appointments has reinforced that assessment.
Waltham Forest Feel Good Centre is currently one of only four East London locations hosting the Mobile Blood Donor Centre. As the year-long pilot enters its second week, discussions are already underway about establishing a regular monthly visit at this site. The partnership highlights the important role community facilities can play in supporting essential NHS services, reaching new donors and helping to save lives.
