NEW OUTDOOR ATHLETICS TRACK - Manchester Regional Arena

As part of Manchester City Council’s continual commitment to invest and improve the city’s sporting facility landscape, MCRactive will close the Outdoor Athletics track at Manchester Regional Arena at the end of January 2020.  The track will close for a complete replacement and significant upgrades to the drainage system. It is anticipated that the new track will re-open to all in May 2020. As part of the legacy from the successful hosting of the 2002 Commonwealth Games, the £1m investment for the new track is being funded and overseen by Manchester City Council and Sport England. Our construction partner Engie has now been contracted to deliver the project which will see a new Polytan Rekortan M surfacing system installed.

The track, which was originally laid in 2001 ahead of the 2002 Commonwealth Games, has seen a fantastic 18 years of athletics take place with some truly memorable moments, and we expect many more memories to be made over the next 20 years once the track re-opens.

Whilst we anticipate some service disruption for users through the build programme, we will work to minimise service impact throughout this period. The Indoor Athletics Track will remain open throughout the works and will require groups and users to book in advance as it is anticipated that usage will be higher than usual. MCRactive will work with the stakeholders, our leisure operator and users / clubs to identify appropriate alternative venues during the closure period if required.

2020 will see the Manchester Regional Arena playing a major role in the UK Athletics Calendar when we host the (sold out) British Athletics Championships Olympic Trials on 20 and 21 June as well as Hosting the English Schools Athletics Championships for the first time in July 2020.
