Construction began at the start of the year to create a new leisure centre and library on the site of the former West Denton Leisure Centre. Once completed, the flagship development will provide state-of-the-art facilities including a 25m swimming pool, 17m training pool, sports hall, gym, café, children’s play area, library, and community spaces where GP drop-in services will be available.

Work completed so far includes the demolition of the old swimming pool and library, as well as the filling of old underground mine workings to stabilise the foundations.

Newcastle City Council secured funding to support the construction of the new leisure centre, including:

  • £19.8 million in Levelling Up Funding from the Government
  • £2.5 million from Sport England

The new development is expected to be completed in December 2027.

During construction, the existing facilities at West Denton Leisure Centre will remain open at the rear of the main build site. These facilities include a well-equipped gym with a wide range of cardio machines, free weights, resistance machines, and functional training equipment.

The centre also offers a diverse fitness class programme led by experienced instructors who are here to support and motivate you on your fitness journey. In addition, the centre runs the Healthwise GP referral scheme.

There is a large four-court sports hall used for fitness classes, badminton, and community group hire. The centre also features high-quality 3G football pitches, which can be booked through our partner We Play Football.

For younger users, the junior programme includes Junior Gym sessions for ages 11 to 17.

Please note that parking will be reduced during the main construction phase, as Morgan Sindall’s site compound will be located in the main car park.
