How do we fit into this?

Better is the customer-facing brand from GLL, a not-for-profit Charitable Social Enterprise committed to delivering a better quality of fitness and leisure, libraries and performing arts facilities for everyone.

We are committed to providing access to great community facilities at a price everyone can afford. We already manage over 258 facilities, and are constantly adding more. We add social value by working for the benefit of everyone; the public, the communities they work in, the environment, their staff and their partners.

Where the money comes from:

  • Personal and Corporate Memberships
  • Gym and Fitness Classes
  • Swimming
  • Junior Activities
  • Facilities and Services
  • Lessons and Courses
  • Gift Cards
  • Club Games

where the money goes:

  • Improving Facilities
  • Reinvesting in the Company

We don’t have shareholders like some private companies do, or any bonuses to pay out. Instead, we reinvest any financial surplus we make back into our services and facilities. So far, we have reinvested over a hundred million pounds.

We are a social enterprise, therefore adding social value is an important part of our trading goal. Where we invest, intervene or operate, community, health and wellbeing improves. We are passionate about making a real difference.

- Peter Bundey, Deputy MD of Better

Adding Social Value

"Social Value refers to wider financial and non-financial impacts of programmes, organisations and interventions, including the wellbeing of individuals and communities, social capital and the environment."

By providing access to sport facilities and physical activity, Better is widely recognised as generating social value in four ways: Improved Health, Reduced Crime, Increased Educational Attainment (employability) and Improved Life Satisfaction (social wellbeing).

We believe everyone should be able to enjoy leisure and sport, and help ensure that those most in need have access to the right facilities.

We believe in delivering a quality service with exceptional people working in your local community. That is why we care equally about better service, better people, better communities and better business.

Better promotes healthy and active lifestyles, giving communities access to facilities that help improve their health and happiness through participation in activities. It could be gyms, libraries, playgrounds or world-class venues such as The London Aquatics Centre or Copper Box Arena. We have it all right here.

We provide more than access: we invest in our communities and it’s not just about money – we also invest time and effort in encouraging everyone to take advantage of our services.

What does this all mean in practice?

As a social enterprise, Better works for the benefit of everyone: the public, the communities we work in, the environment, our staff and our partners.

As a result, we are proud to be the first leisure operator in the UK to be awarded the Social Enterprise Mark (which we held from 2010 until 2013), Social Enterprise UK badge and the Prime Minister’s Big Society Award.

  • We believe social values are just as important - if not more - as financial performance.
  • We are owned by our staff and society members, who have a non-dividend-paying share. Our workforce is empowered, motivated and involved in making important decisions that affect the company.
  • Wherever possible, we work with other like-minded social enterprises, organisations and agencies and buy Fairtrade goods and services.
  • Part of your membership fee is donated to the GLL Sport Foundation, which helps talented UK athletes reach their true sporting potential.
  • We are committed to reducing our carbon emissions, wastage and overall impact on the environment.

What does this mean for our members?

We believe everyone in the community should be able to enjoy the many and varied benefits of a healthy and active lifestyle. We do this by providing a variety of sport, leisure and fitness facilities at a range of prices to suit every budget.

There is much more to your local leisure centre than a swim or a session in the gym. Sport can have a positive influence in the community. At Better, we believe in putting the community first and, that commitment also extends to the reducing our impact on the environment. Being a member means you can be part of a great opportunity to make a real difference in understanding, representing and improving our local communities.
