On Saturday 22nd April, a team of runners represented the Royal Borough of Greenwich at the annual mini London marathon championships.  The event was staged for the very first time in its history on the Saturday before the main marathon.  The course covers the last 2.6 kilometres of the main marathon and welcomes teams of young people from each London borough, region and home nation. Some 10,000 children were cheered on by crowds, friends and family in the biggest ever Mini London Marathon.

Team Greenwich was made up of 28 young people (16 female & 12 male) completing the 2.6K or one-mile course in the mass participation event and championship races, designed for the best young athletes.

World 1500m champion Jake Wightman returned to The Mall as the Official Starter and awarded medals to rising stars of the standalone event.  Wightman, who won his historic gold medal at the World Championships in Oregon last summer, was delighted to be back at the event he took part in twice as a youngster.

There were a number of stand-out performances from team Greenwich, a special mention goes to 15 year old Olly Buck, who ran in the under 17’s category, recording a top 30 finish.

The Mini marathon sits under GLL’s wider provision for young people in Greenwich, which features the London Youth Games.  The busiest part of the London Youth Games season is about to begin, to find out more how your child can take part click on the link below.
