Kensington Leisure Centre are pleased that once again that during this school holidays we worked with the tennis charity Give It Your Max to provide two free tennis camps for local children aged 5-11 years. Camps took place on Thursday and Friday with one taking place in the morning and one in the afternoon on both days. All equipment was provided and sessions were lead be two level 3 coaches that have many years of delivering holiday camps for children of all ages and abilities.

Both camps were full with 40 bookings which is extremely pleasing and shows the importance held for these camps within the local community. They offer the chance for local children to experience a sport that they might not otherwise have the opportunity to, be taught in a great facility by experienced coaches and make new friends.  The camps also encourage a health lifestyle promoting the importance of developing good habits from an early age.

The camps are designed so all abilities can benefit from participating in them with beginners encouraged to join. Coaches use a range of individual and team games to help develop children’s hand eye co-ordination and tennis skills, pupils were taught the basic strokes that are used in tennis so they went away with a greater knowledge of the sport. One of the main purpose of the camps is to create a friendly environment were children can enjoy themselves and make new friends which we are pleased to say happened in both camps.

GIYM is a UK tennis charity, which has the purpose of introducing primary school aged children to tennis. The majority of the children who participate in their programmes come from inner city areas where tennis is not traditionally played and who might not otherwise receive an opportunity to play tennis without GIYM’s funding. GIYM’s objectivities in particular are to help enable children to develop their social, physical and cognitive skills in a healthy, sporting environment.

Feedback received from a parent whose son was taking part in one of the camps…

‘Thanks, my son has really enjoyed tennis camp. I can see his confidence growing, meeting new people, his tennis skills and Co ordination are getting better. Plus he feels really comfortable with the coaches. This is one activity he really really enjoys’.
