GLL Sport Foundation (GSF), in partnership with Lambeth Council’s Gifted and Talented Programme, supports talented athletes who live, train, or are educated in the borough. 2019/20 saw 108 athletes funded with £59,700 worth of support. All the athletes are local and many use Better facilities, whether that is for their sports sessions or their strength & conditioning and fitness training.

 

ATHLETE OF THE MONTH – SEPTEMBER 2019

We are pleased to announce that the September Athlete of the Month winner is Xander Mavolwane Wright (Cycling). Xander became the British BMX Champion for the male 11 category whilst he also retained his National BMX title for the 4th consecutive year, a fantastic achievement.

 

OTHER RESULTS

INTERNATIONAL:

Tracey Griffiths (Athletics) recently competed for GB&NI at the World Transplant Games which were held in Gateshead. Impressively, she performed in two different sports returning home with 2 silver medals in basketball and discus. Tracey also competed in the British transplant games and achieved four golds in basketball, shot put, discus & javelin and silver in the ball throw revealing an extremely successful summer period. Catherine Demont (Swimming) competed in the FINA World Masters Swimming Championships in Gwangju, South Korea in August where she won a medal for 5th place in the 400m freestyle - 25-29yrs, her highest world ranking to date. Catherine also had top ten finishes in her three other events: 100m freestyle, 200m freestyle and 200m butterfly. Hector Jones (Pentathlon) gained invaluable experience whilst representing Team GB at the Laser Run World Championships in Budapest a year young.

 

NATIONAL:

Jonathon Ilori (Athletics) achieved an excellent 6th place at the National Championships which were held at the Alexander Stadium in Birmingham. Whilst competing in the triple jump, his jump of 16.25m was only 3cm shy of his personal best and a fantastic achievement amongst the nations very best. Skye Mavolwane Wright (Cycling) also earned a podium position at the British BMX Championships with a superb 3rd place finish. What makes this all the more impressive is that Skye was the youngest in the 13-16yr Female Cruiser class and competing in what is her first full season in the cruiser class. After an excellent showing at the European Championships earlier this summer, Josh Uduje (Basketball) continued his fine form as he finished up with the number 1 ranking after the 2019 edition of the Deng Top 50 camp held at Crystal Palace from August 21-24. This unbelievable achievement means Josh has already cemented his status amongst the elite of his generation. Leila Denniston (Ultimate Frisbee) competed in the National Championship with her mixed gender club team, Deep Space. They won a superb silver medal whilst also qualifying for the European Club Championships, the first time in the club's history. Columba Blango (Athletics) achieved a new 400m PB recording 48.28s whilst competing British Athletics Parallel Success and Open at Newham. Flora Perkins (Cycling) finished an excellent 3rd place in the madison and the scratch at the national youth track championships and also got a 3rd in GC at the North West youth tour completing a successful month of racing.

 

 

SELECTION:

Hal Jones (Fencing) has been selected by British Fencing to represent the U17 GBR cadet team where his first competition is in Budapest on 6th October.
