GLL Sports Awards 2025 – Get Active Award Winner
We’re delighted to announce that the Get Active Award at the GLL Sports Awards 2025 goes to Garry Townsend Kennedy
In June 2015 Garry suddenly developed Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) a rare and rapidly progressing neurological condition. Garry lost all sensation from the neck down and was left unable to move, beginning a six-month battle. Across two hospitals – enduring complete physical dependence, significant muscle loss, and immense mental strain.
Over time through daily physiotherapy and sheer determination, Garry progressed form from wheelchair use to a Zimmer frame, to crutches. Continuing physiotherapy at home, his determination led him to be referred to The Queens Diamond Jubilee Centre, beginning with chair-based exercise and pool-based walking.
Garry has completed multiple fundraising challenges, including Santa Walk, Stratford Half Marathon, Isle Of Wight Walk, Myton Walk and the moonlight walk, raising vital funds for others receiving hospital care.
Today Garry is a regular gym user at The Queens Diamond Jubilee Centre and now plays walking football, demonstrating that activity continues to play a central role in his wellbeing. His Journey from paralysis to regular physical activity is remarkable, inspiring, and an example of how movement can transform both physical and mental health.
Congratulations, Garry – very well deserved!
