Karen’s Healthwise Journey – Finding Strength Through Swimming
When Karen was first referred to the Healthwise scheme by her GP, she was looking for a way to manage and support her long-term health conditions, including prolapsed stenosis in her lower spine, lumbar radiculopathy, spinal compression, rheumatoid and osteoarthritis, and fibromyalgia. Walking with two sticks and unable to move unaided, even simple daily tasks such as getting dressed were a struggle.

From her very first session, Karen felt at ease. During her initial assessment with Kathy, she was supported to set realistic and achievable goals, helping her to focus on what she could do rather than what she couldn’t. With continued encouragement from Kathy and the Healthwise team, Karen began increasing her physical activity and quickly started to notice a positive change — not only physically, but mentally too.

Karen now swims regularly at Windrush Leisure Centre, attending up to five times a week. When she first began, she managed 20 lengths in 50 minutes. Over just four months, she has built her strength and stamina, and now completes an incredible 1.5 miles per session. She says that swimming has become a vital part of her routine and a huge boost to her confidence.

“I now feel more comfortable in social situations and more confident in my ability to try new things, both in and out of the pool,” says Karen. “The support from Kathy, Heidi, Sam, and other Healthwise participants has been amazing. It’s a real community — everyone helps each other find the strength to keep going.”

Karen’s journey is a powerful reminder of how the right support, encouragement, and community can make all the difference.
