York’s newest leisure centre celebrates its second birthday.

York Leisure Centre, part of the York Stadium Leisure Complex located in Monks Cross, Huntington, York has officially turned two!

The two years have not been without its challenges as the Covid-19 pandemic continued throughout our first year however; despite of this York Leisure Centre has had a fantastic two years welcoming thousands of customers.

So what’s new?

The gym which overlooks the LNER Community Stadium pitch continues to develop with the addition of new equipment including a new functional rig, punching bag and new strength equipment. The fitness class timetable has seen the introduction of brand new classes and instructors including Fitness Rebounding which is a low impact exercise using a small trampoline and Yoga classes available every day of the week.

For swimming there’s a 6 lane, 25 metre swimming pool, as well as a shallow learner pool and toddlers splash pool with interactive water jets, perfect for gaining water confidence and swimming lessons.
Swimming lessons continue to grow and the centre has recently launched adult ‘Swim Doctor’ sessions. Over 16’s can pay as they learn with drop in Adult beginner lessons, and drop in Adult Swim Training sessions on Thursday evenings. These lessons have proved a massive hit, with participants enjoying the extra push from our resident Swim Doctor Annabeth.
Children’s swimming lessons are also available from 3 months up, and due to demand the centre has now launched afternoon lessons on Thursdays from 3:45pm.

The Clip ‘n’ Climb has proven to be a massive hit, perfect for rainy days and birthday parties. The colourful climbing walls provide fun and adventure for both child and adult climbers alike. Each 7.5m climbing panel is equipped with auto belay – an automatic safety feature – to take up the slack as you climb and then lower you gently and securely to the floor. Clip ‘n’ Climb is available for those 4 years plus and open every day during school holidays and Friday – Sundays term time.

Continuous programme development and staff training has meant that York Leisure Centre has been able to successfully introduce inclusive activities with the launch of a Special Educational Needs Clip n Climb session on a Friday afternoon. The SEN focused Clip 'n' Climb session has a reduced capacity and no music to support any sensory sensitivities.
February 2023 sees the launch of an inclusive swimming session on a Saturday afternoon in which customers and their careers/family can enjoy a specific session and full use of the Main Pool, Learner Pool and Splash Pad.

York Leisure Centre at Monks Cross, is run by Better. Better also runs Yearsley Pool, Burnholme Sports Centre and Energise Leisure Centre. All four centres welcome members and non members and offer a wide range of non contract memberships from city wide access, centre only, off peak, senior, and concessionary options and because we’re a Charitable Social Enterprise every penny we make is re-invested back into improving facilities and services for everyone to enjoy.
