Yashangi, 39 Years, Cardiff – For many years, water was a source of deep fear for Yashangi. The idea of getting into a pool brought anxiety, and swimming always felt like something meant for other people - those who grew up confident in the water, not someone who had avoided it for most of her life. This fear quietly shaped her experiences, limiting opportunities and moments she wished she could enjoy.

A year ago, she made a decision that would change that narrative. She began 1‑1 swimming lessons, not simply to acquire a new skill, but to confront a long‑standing fear head‑on. The first session felt daunting, yet it also marked an important turning point.

Rachel, her instructor at Eastern Leisure Centre Cardiff, played a key role in this transformation. With steady patience, genuine kindness, and consistent encouragement, she created an environment where progress felt possible. What once seemed overwhelming gradually became manageable. Small victories in the pool built into larger moments of confidence, each one chipping away at the fear that had lingered for so long.

Over time, the water became less of a barrier and more of a space for growth. Through gentle guidance and supportive teaching, Rachel helped Yashangi discover a sense of ease that she never imagined she could feel in the water.

Today, swimming represents far more than a newly acquired ability. It stands as a reminder that it’s never too late to face something that once felt impossible. For Yashangi, beginning these lessons has truly been one of the best decisions she has ever made.

If you’re part of the Eastern community and have your own story of overcoming fear, embracing learning, or achieving, we’d love to hear it. Share your journey with us and inspire others to begin theirs.
