Better Launches ‘Active April’ to Support Local Carers
To mark the 61st anniversary of Carers UK, all Better Leisure Centres in Newcastle and Gateshead are partnering with the charity to offer carers discounted access to fitness facilities during ‘Active April’ from 1st April to 1st May 2026.
Throughout this period, Carers UK members and those receiving Carer’s Allowance can access Better leisure centres at a discounted rate of £34 per month. This membership includes access to the gym, swimming pool, fitness classes. Concessionary memberships are also available within Gateshead and Newcastle. These are from £21.85 per month! On Carers UK’s Active Together Day on Wednesday 15th April, all Gateshead and Newcastle venues will open their doors for a free day pass for all Carers. To access this offer you will need to bring proof of either receiving Carer’s Allowance or Carers UK Membership to reception on the day. We will also be running Welcome Events on Wednesday 15th April at Birtley Leisure Centre from 11am-1pm and East End Pool from 2pm-4pm if any Carer wishes to meet our staff who will be able to answer any questions you have.
The initiative aims to highlight the importance of physical activity for carers, with research showing that 67% of unpaid carers feel more connected to others when they stay active.
GLL Chief Executive Peter Bundey emphasized the company’s commitment to supporting carers, stating, “We recognise the vital role that carers play in their communities and want to help improve their health and well-being through this initiative.”
Carers UK Chief Executive Helen Walker welcomed the partnership, encouraging carers to take advantage of these opportunities to improve their well-being, reduce stress, and connect with others.
